The economy of the city is based mainly on tourism (the famous Bibione) and agriculture.
The name is a tribute to the patron and the Tagliamento river, which flows slowly near the city.
San Michele Archangelo, celebrated on September 29, is the protector of San Michele al Tagliamento.
